MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – Local Ulama (religious leaders and scholars) who attended the “First Consultative Conference for Cooperation and Solidarity among Ulama of Lanao” here on Sat, Nov. 26, have proposed for the creation of the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs that may embody all Islamic religious affairs in the Bangsamoro region.
The proposal is presented during the one-day conference under the auspices of the Office of Member of Parliament (MP) Alim Abdulaziz M. Amenoden, a newly appointed member of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), representing Nur Misuari’s faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
The Ulama coming from different municipalities around the province of Lanao del Sur also suggested the proposed ministry be run by Ulama for their knowledge, wisdom, expertise, and experience in order to contribute to helping the Bangsamoro government achieve its vision for a peaceful, developed and prosperous autonomous government in Muslim Mindanao.
They asked MP Amenoden to bring this bid to the floor of the BTA and seek support from his colleagues for the possible enactment of a law that will create the ministry which will manage the following:
- Darul Ifta
- Zakat and Awqaf
- Islamic Financing and Banking
- Halal Tourism
- Shariah Justice of the BARMM
- Related Issues on Muslim Law
- Other issues concerning non-Muslim in the BARMM
- Other Islamic Concerns.
The consultation was facilitated by a technical working group (TWG) composed of independent Ulama led by Dr. Anwar Radiamoda, director of the Mindanao State University (MSU) Sharia Center in Marawi City.
