MAFAR deploys coral nursery units in Lanao del Sur

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform deploys 11 coral nursery units with coral fragments in Banago village in the municipality of Balabagan, as part of the coral reef restoration efforts in some identified areas of the Bangsamoro region. (MAFAR)

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)–The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform deployed coral nursery units (CNU) in the waters of Balabagan town as part of the region-wide marine conservation and restoration efforts.

A total of 11 CNUs were deployed and transplanted with coral fragments or coral of opportunities collected near the site on June 1-3, 2022 in Brgy. Banago, municipality of Balabagan.

It was conducted by MAFAR’s Fisheries Resource Management Division (FRMD) and Fishery Regulatory and Law Enforcement Division (FRLED) in collaboration with Banago village officials, the local government unit of Balabagan, and MAFAR provincial office.

This restoration effort is part of the Ministry’s initiatives to restore the degraded coral reefs in some identified areas of the Bangsamoro region and increase the productivity of marine resources.

MAFAR is also set to conduct another CNU deployment in Bongo Island, Parang, and Maguindanao within the quarter of this year. (APB/PIA Lanao del Sur with report from MAFAR)
