MALACANANG PALACE, Manila: The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) strongly condemns the killing of PADABA FM Radio Disc Jockey Ric Ian Bill “DJ Ian” De Leon who was shot dead at Brgy. Managa-naga, Bulan,  Sorsogon, on 13 August 2020 at around 6:30 in the evening.

In a report submitted by the local Philippine National Police (PNP) to PTFoMS, De Leon was about to ride his motorcycle when he was shot several times at point-blank range by an unidentified assailant, hitting his head and body.   The victim was pronounced dead-on-arrival after he was rushed to Bulan Medicare Hospital.

Investigators recovered eight empty shells of unknown caliber from the crime scene, which will be submitted to the PNP Provincial Crime Laboratory Office for ballistic and cross matching examination. The motive for the shooting is still being determined by the police.

While the Presidential Task Force as a matter of policy presumes all cases to be work related, initial investigation indicated that the victim could have not earned enemies as a disc jockey because his program was purely musical entertainment. The Task Force is looking at different angles such as personal and others.

“Our heart goes out to the bereaved family of DJ Ian De Leon. We resolve to find out the perpetrators behind this killing. They will be held accountable for their lawless actions as this administration will never turn a blind eye to heinous acts against media workers,” the PTFoMS Co-Chair and Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin M. Andanar said.

For his part, PTFoMS Executive Director USec. Joel Sy Egco said that “the Task Force is closely coordinating with the authorities in the investigation of the case. No stone will be left unturned and we will not rest until we have the murderers behind bars.”

The Presidential Task Force shall continue to monitor and inform the public on the developments in the De Leon shooting incident. (PTFoMS)
